Yu Peng

Choreographer, performer, and Artistic Director

Peng Yu is a contemporary choreographer, performer, and Artistic Director of Peng Yu Contemporary Dance Company and Huaxia City Contemporary Dance Company. Formerly a part-time choreographer and modern dance instructor at the Asia Television Academy, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the contemporary dance landscape in Southern China since 2010.

In 2010, Peng founded 07 Five Dance Art Space, launching a series of influential regional dance initiatives including the Shenzhen Nanshan Creative Park Modern Dance Week, Guangzhou Modern Dance Week, Shenzhen Improvisation Dance Festival, and the Rice Field Dance Festival “Five Cities Connection.” His practice extends beyond conventional theaters, engaging landscapes and urban peripheries—most notably through constructing the Half-Mountain Theatre on the border of Shenzhen and Dongguan.

Peng’s works and curatorial practices have been featured in major festivals such as the Hong Kong Dance Festival, iDance Festival, Utopian Theatre Festival (Wuzhen), Shanghai Arts Festival, Shenzhen Fringe Festival, Guangxi Dance Festival, Shenzhen Art Biennial events, and the Shenzhen & Hong Kong Urbanism\Architecture Biennale. Internationally, his works have been screened or presented at dance film festivals in the United States, Ireland, Malaysia, and across Europe.

Since 2017, his companies have expanded globally, with works selected for the American Dance Film Festival, Copenhagen International Choreography Competition, Rotterdam Duet Choreography Competition, and the Hannover International Choreography Competition. Alongside performance and creation, Peng continues to lead training initiatives, dance education programs, and overseas study projects, making him a significant figure in the development of contemporary dance in South China.
