STRATUM Journal is shaped by an editorial structure that supports scholarly rigor, artistic practice, critical writing, and interdisciplinary cultural thought.
The journal publishes peer-reviewed Research Articles alongside editorially reviewed Critical Essays, Reviews, Interviews & Conversations, Artist Features & Portfolios, Field Notes & Public Discourse, and Experimental Writing & Series. Its editorial structure is designed to reflect this range while maintaining clear standards of review, publication ethics, and editorial responsibility.

Valkyrie Yao is an artist, choreographer, editor, producer, and interdisciplinary researcher working across performance studies, ritual studies, visual culture, artistic research, and global arts and humanities. As Editor-in-Chief, she oversees STRATUM’s editorial direction, publication standards, journal development, issue planning, editorial governance, and final publication decisions.
Managing Editor
Yuhan Zhu
Managing Editor, STRATUM Journal
Yuhan Zhu supports STRATUM’s editorial workflow, submission management, author communication, translation coordination, Chinese-language platform development, production scheduling, metadata, and issue organization. Her role helps maintain the journal’s editorial continuity across languages, contributors, publication sections, and production timelines.

Editorial & Production Associate, STRATUM Journal
Yuyang Hu supports STRATUM’s proofreading, copyediting, publication preparation, digital posting, editorial marketing coordination, archive organization, and public-facing presentation. Her role helps translate journal content into clear, accessible, and carefully maintained digital publication formats.
Editorial Board
STRATUM Journal is developing an international Editorial Board of scholars, artists-researchers, curators, critics, and cultural practitioners with expertise across the journal’s fields.
Editorial Board members may support the journal by advising on scholarly direction, recommending peer reviewers, contributing to special issue development, reviewing manuscripts when available, and helping maintain the journal’s academic and editorial standards.
The Editorial Board is intended to include expertise in areas such as:

Contemporary art and visual culture
Moving image and experimental media
Curatorial studies and exhibition practice
Critical theory and global humanities
Artistic research and practice-based inquiry
Postcolonial and decolonial methodologies

Advisory Board
STRATUM is also developing an Advisory Board to support its broader artistic, curatorial, institutional, and cultural development.
Advisory Board members may include artists, curators, cultural organizers, institutional leaders, editors, publishers, and interdisciplinary practitioners whose work aligns with STRATUM’s mission.
The Advisory Board supports STRATUM’s long-term development through guidance, networks, public programming insight, artistic perspective, and field-level knowledge. Advisory Board members do not necessarily participate in peer review unless separately invited for a specific submission.

Peer Review Network
STRATUM maintains a developing network of peer reviewers with expertise across the journal’s fields.
Peer reviewers are invited according to the subject, method, field, and context of each Research Article submission. Reviewers may include scholars, artist-researchers, curators, critics, and practitioners with relevant expertise.
Peer reviewers are not necessarily listed publicly unless they also serve on the Editorial Board or agree to public acknowledgment. STRATUM respects the confidentiality of the peer review process.
Editorial Responsibilities
The editorial structure supports the following responsibilities:

Final publication decisions rest with the Editor-in-Chief in consultation with the relevant editors.
Board Terms and Participation
Editorial Board and Advisory Board roles are service-based appointments that support the development of STRATUM Journal.
Board members may be appointed for a renewable term, typically two years. Participation may include occasional advising, reviewer recommendations, manuscript review when available, special issue consultation, or field-specific guidance.
Board membership does not guarantee publication in STRATUM and does not imply responsibility for every editorial decision.
