STRATUM Journal is shaped by an editorial structure that supports scholarly rigor, artistic practice, critical writing, and interdisciplinary cultural thought.

The journal publishes peer-reviewed Research Articles alongside editorially reviewed Critical Essays, Reviews, Interviews & Conversations, Artist Features & Portfolios, Field Notes & Public Discourse, and Experimental Writing & Series. Its editorial structure is designed to reflect this range while maintaining clear standards of review, publication ethics, and editorial responsibility.

STRATUM’s editorial and advisory structure brings together practitioners across contemporary art, performance, visual culture, moving image, curatorial practice, artistic research, and critical humanities.

Yuhan Zhu

Editor-in-Chief, STRATUM Journal

Yuhan Zhu is an arts administrator, editor, and interdisciplinary artist from China, currently pursuing her M.A. in Arts Administration at Teachers College, Columbia University. She holds an Honours B.A. in Arts Management and Studio Art from the University of Toronto. She currently works with ELSEHERE International Arts Nexus across editorial, communications, and curatorial projects, and has previously worked with the World Expo Museum and TANK Shanghai. Her interests center on public engagement, inclusive curatorial practices, and the intersections of cultural institutions, subculture, and community. Alongside her administrative work, she maintains an interdisciplinary art practice spanning digital illustration, installation, and video, informed by personal memory, feminist and queer perspectives, and fandom cultures.

Founding Editor & Publisher

Valkyrie Yao

Founding Editor & Publisher, STRATUM Journal

Valkyrie Yao is an artist, choreographer, editor, producer, and interdisciplinary researcher working across performance studies, ritual studies, visual culture, artistic research, and global arts and humanities. She is the Founder and Executive Director of ELSEHERE International Arts Nexus and the Founding Editor & Publisher of STRATUM Journal, where she established the journal’s editorial vision, intellectual framework, and publishing structure.

A 2026–27 Folger Institute Artistic Research Fellow and 2026 Djerassi Resident Artist, Yao develops research and artistic projects across archives, performance, moving image, material practice, and cultural history. Her work has been presented through museums, festivals, universities, and arts institutions in the United States and internationally. As Founding Editor & Publisher, she guides STRATUM’s long-term intellectual and institutional direction, editorial standards, publishing strategy, and relationship with ELSEHERE, while supporting the journal’s development as an independent platform for rigorous work across art, culture, and the humanities.

Editorial & Production Associate

Yuyang Hu

Editorial & Production Associate, STRATUM Journal

Yuyang Hu supports STRATUM’s proofreading, copyediting, publication preparation, digital posting, editorial marketing coordination, archive organization, and public-facing presentation. Her role helps translate journal content into clear, accessible, and carefully maintained digital publication formats.

Lead Editor

Lilliana Miller

Lead Editor, STRATUM Journal

Lilliana Miller is a NYC-based journalist, researcher, dancer, choreographer, and digital media creative. She is a 2025 Meisel Scholar and holds two degrees from Fordham University including a B.F.A. in dance through the Fordham/Alvin-Ailey B.F.A. program and a B.A. in English in the Creative Writing Concentration. Her work has been published with Pointe Magazine, The Dance Enthusiast, and Motion By Degrees and currently serves on STRATUM Research Journal's Editorial Team and as a lead Editor, Visual Branding Director, and contributing writer to Motion By Degrees. Alongside developing her dance and choreographic research, Lilliana freelances across the fields of dance, digital media, marketing & communications, graphic design, education, and journalism. Grounded in research, curiousity, and investigative learning, her academic and creative works aim to explore the intersections of human communication, movement, cultural exchange, and storytelling; as well as their role in shaping our human experience and how we find common ground.

Editorial Board

STRATUM Journal is developing an international Editorial Board of scholars, artists-researchers, curators, critics, and cultural practitioners with expertise across the journal’s fields.

Editorial Board members may support the journal by advising on scholarly direction, recommending peer reviewers, contributing to special issue development, reviewing manuscripts when available, and helping maintain the journal’s academic and editorial standards.

The Editorial Board is intended to include expertise in areas such as:

Performance studies
Dance studies
Contemporary art and visual culture
Moving image and experimental media
Curatorial studies and exhibition practice
Critical theory and global humanities
Artistic research and practice-based inquiry
Postcolonial and decolonial methodologies
Diaspora, embodiment, and cultural memory

Advisory Board

STRATUM is also developing an Advisory Board to support its broader artistic, curatorial, institutional, and cultural development.

Advisory Board members may include artists, curators, cultural organizers, institutional leaders, editors, publishers, and interdisciplinary practitioners whose work aligns with STRATUM’s mission.

The Advisory Board supports STRATUM’s long-term development through guidance, networks, public programming insight, artistic perspective, and field-level knowledge. Advisory Board members do not necessarily participate in peer review unless separately invited for a specific submission.

STRATUM may appoint Section Editors as the journal develops.

Section Editors may support submission review, editorial development, contributor communication, issue planning, and section-specific quality standards.

Peer Review Network

STRATUM maintains a developing network of peer reviewers with expertise across the journal’s fields.

Peer reviewers are invited according to the subject, method, field, and context of each Research Article submission. Reviewers may include scholars, artist-researchers, curators, critics, and practitioners with relevant expertise.

Peer reviewers are not necessarily listed publicly unless they also serve on the Editorial Board or agree to public acknowledgment. STRATUM respects the confidentiality of the peer review process.

Editorial Responsibilities

The editorial structure supports the following responsibilities:

Maintaining the journal’s aims, scope, and publication standards
Distinguishing peer-reviewed and editorially reviewed sections
Supporting fair and transparent review processes
Upholding publication ethics
Ensuring appropriate attribution, permissions, and documentation
Maintaining clarity, readability, and editorial care
Supporting long-term access, citation, and issue-based archiving

Final publication decisions rest with the Editor-in-Chief in consultation with the relevant editors.

Board Terms and Participation

Editorial Board and Advisory Board roles are service-based appointments that support the development of STRATUM Journal.

Board members may be appointed for a renewable term, typically two years. Participation may include occasional advising, reviewer recommendations, manuscript review when available, special issue consultation, or field-specific guidance.

Board membership does not guarantee publication in STRATUM and does not imply responsibility for every editorial decision.
