Submit to STRATUM

STRATUM Journal welcomes submissions from scholars, artists, writers, curators, critics, researchers, and interdisciplinary practitioners working across contemporary art, performance, visual culture, moving image, curatorial practice, artistic research, and the critical humanities.

We publish work that moves between artistic practice, scholarly inquiry, and critical reflection. STRATUM is especially interested in writing that approaches art and culture as sites of knowledge, memory, relation, embodiment, translation, public discourse, and historical pressure.

STRATUM supports rigorous and accessible forms of publication. We welcome research-based writing, criticism, interviews, artist-centered texts, field notes, practice-based reflection, and selected experimental forms. We are committed to plural knowledge traditions and to editorial approaches that do not reduce intellectual work to a single academic template.

At the same time, STRATUM takes citation, authorship, editorial care, and intellectual accountability seriously. Submissions should be original, carefully prepared, clearly sourced where appropriate, and aligned with the journal’s aims and scope.

Our Orientation

STRATUM values thoughtful inquiry, intellectual accountability, and the crossing of disciplines, media, and methods.

We publish work that contributes to contemporary discussions in art, culture, and the humanities while remaining accessible and relevant to a wider readership. We are especially interested in writing that approaches art and culture as sites of knowledge, memory, relation, embodiment, translation, public discourse, and historical pressure.

STRATUM welcomes work grounded in research, artistic practice, curatorial experience, fieldwork, archival inquiry, public culture, image-making, performance, and situated forms of knowledge.

We do not charge readers subscription fees or access fees. STRATUM is committed to widening access to artistic and critical writing while maintaining careful editorial standards.

We do not currently charge submission or publication fees for standard journal submissions. If any fee-based editorial program, special publication opportunity, or separate ELSEHERE service applies, it will be clearly identified as separate from STRATUM Journal’s academic submission process.

Citation and References

STRATUM recommends Chicago style for research articles and scholarly essays, but we also accept MLA, APA, Harvard, and other recognized citation systems when appropriate to the field or form of the work.

Our primary requirement is that citations remain consistent, complete, verifiable, and ethically used. STRATUM understands citation not only as a formatting rule, but as a practice of intellectual care, accountability, and traceability.

Experimental, practice-based, visual, conversational, and hybrid submissions may use citation practices appropriate to their form, provided that sources, collaborators, archives, images, translations, interviews, and borrowed materials are acknowledged clearly.

Authors should:

  • Use one citation style consistently.

  • Provide complete references for all sources.

  • Verify the accuracy of quotations and attributions.

  • Acknowledge archives, images, interviews, translations, collaborators, and third-party materials where applicable.

  • Practice ethical citation with intellectual care.

Submissions must be original and must not contain plagiarism, fabricated materials, or misrepresented authorship.

Authors are responsible for securing permissions for images, media, artworks, archival materials, screenshots, documentation, translations, interviews, and third-party materials included in their submission.

Translations require authorization or clear acknowledgment of the original source and translator.

Interviews require consent from all participants.

Collaborators, contributors, translators, photographers, archives, and institutions should be acknowledged where appropriate.
