The man sleeps in a dark room. In his dream, he sees a mare—the mare of nightmare—and merges with his dream. This isn't a dream, it's a nightmare. Thoughts swarm his mind like insects. He opens his eyes but cannot wake up. This mare is perhaps his own anima, and the nightmare is his confrontation with it. The panic it causes is such a Dionysian moment that it almost resembles love.
