Author-Prepared Essay Publication

Overview

This format is designed for artists, writers, curators, and cultural practitioners who already have a completed text and are seeking publication through STRATUM.

It works as a low-barrier entry into ELSEHERE’s editorial system, while also allowing contributors to choose a more expanded format depending on how they want the text to appear and what kind of public-facing value they need around it.

For some writers, a simple published text is enough. For others, the text needs to sit alongside images, connect to an artist presentation, or carry stronger citation value through DOI support. This format is built to accommodate those different needs without forcing every contributor into the same model.

Best for

  • artists and writers with a finished text ready for publication

  • contributors seeking a more formal public-facing context than self-publishing alone

  • artists building written portfolio materials for grants, residencies, academic use, and visa-related documentation

  • contributors who want publication options that can expand into image support, linked presentation, and stronger citation structure

Why?

This format keeps the threshold low without collapsing everything into one flat publication model.

Some contributors only need a text published cleanly. Others need the text to sit beside visual material, connect to a stronger public-facing profile, or carry a more formal citation framework. By structuring this format in tiers, the publication can stay accessible while still offering meaningful expansion where needed.

That makes it especially useful for artists and writers who are building a more serious long-term record, whether for gallery submissions, grant applications, residency proposals, academic use, or visa portfolio documentation.

ABOUT STRATUM

ELSEHERE's official journal

All selected features are published in STRATUM, a bilingual journal registered with a U.S. ISSN and held in the Library of Congress. Publication here carries weight beyond visibility — it creates a durable, citable record.

Selection & Fee

A PUBLICATION FEE APPLIES ONLY TO SELECTED ARTISTS.

If cost would otherwise make participation difficult, you are welcome to note this in your submission. ELSEHERE offers a limited support option for artists who are unable to cover the full publication fee. Depending on individual circumstances, support may be offered at 50% of the fee or, in select cases, at full support. At this time, this option is available for the Written Interview Feature and the Author-Prepared Essay Publication in the journal.

This format is offered on a selected basis.

There is no fee to submit for review.

If confirmed, the current publication fee (selected artists only) is:

  • Text-Only Publication $45

A limited number of supported placements may be considered where cost would otherwise prevent participation.
